Etienne Henri (or even Nicolas) Méhul (June 24, 1763 - October 18, 1817), was a French composer.

Life and Work

He was natural at Givet in Ardennes. His father existence as well unfortunate to give him the regular musical education, his 1st lessons come from either the unfortunate unsighted organist of Givet; eventually such was his aptitude that, while ten years old, he was appointed organist of the convent of the Récollets. Inside 1775 a German musician and organist, Wilhelm Hauser, was engaged for the monastery of Lavaldieu, a few miles from either Givet, & Méhul became his occasional pupil.

Within 1778 he was taken to Paris by the officer, & laid himself under Edelmann, a harpsichord player. His foremost tries at subservient composition around 1781 did not succeed, & he so turned his attention to sacred & spectacular music. Christoph Willibald Gluck gave him advice in his studies.

Fallowing various disappointments when you took his efforts for vi years to obtain, at the Grand Opéra, a production of his Cora et Alonzo, he offered to the Opéra Comique his Euphrosine et Coradin, which, existence accepted & performed around 1790, at once fixed his reputation. His opera, Stratonice, was besides received by owning enthusiasm inside 1792 (years later, Berlioz was an admirer of that piece, especially praising the overture). When many less successful productions, his Adrien appeared, & his fame was farther increased by his triplet better works, ''La jeunesse 500'Henri IV, Uthal & Joseph, a finest of the series. Uthal was written for an orchestra while forgoing fiddle.

Méhul held a post when one of the iv inspectors of the Conservatoire de Paris, though this office processed him sense high-pressure a insufficiency of his early studies. Timoléon, Ariodant (1799) and Bion followed. Gourmet'' was composed by Méhul, & Cherubini jointly. Méhul's next opera, dedicated to the Foremost Consul Napoleon Bonaparte, ''L'irato, ou fifty'emporté'' (1801), failed.

Besides forty-both operas, Méhul composed the total of songs for the festivals of the republic (typically comissioned per emperor Napoleon), cantatas, and iv symphonies in the years 1808 to 1810. A Number 1 Symphony was revived within one of Felix Mendelssohn's concerts with a Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in the late 1830s to an audience including Robert Schumann, who praised a piece. All told quartet movements there are a few stylistic similarities by using Beethoven's Symphony No.5 (including the dissonant, furious mood of the first movement and the string pizzicatos in the third), which left Schumann wondering if Méhul had heard Beethoven's piece. Actually two symphonies were composed in the equivalent season, 1808, were published in the below, 1809, and continued a path Haydn (the Paris Symphonies, 1785-86, e.g.) & Mozart (Symphony No. 40, K.550, 1788) had taken, two composers who enjoyed great popularity in France in the early 19th century.

Méhul's health gave way from either an tenderness of the chest, & he died around Paris within 1817. His grave is at a graveyard of Père Lachaise, near a grave of a second french composer, his contemporary François-Joseph Gossec. His music influenced many composers, among the babies Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner.
